Density Investigation | A Physics School Project

Hey! In this short post, I will be performing a small experiment covering the topics Density, Mass and Volume

Step 1!!

Write a prediction for the following cases:

Case 1: Same volume of raw rice vs. puffed rice

Case 2: Same number of grains of raw rice vs. puffed rice

This is my prediction:

  1. There will be more raw rice grains than puffed rice grains.
  2. The puff rice will have more volume than the raw rice.

Step 2

Perform Case 1

  1. Find two small boxes/containers of the same size (You can use bowls, or vials as well)
  2. Fill Raw rice grains in to one and Puffed rice into one.
  3. Complete the table on the next slide.

Now write down what you observe and an explanation for it

The raw rice is heavier than the puffed riceThere are more raw rice grains than puffed rice grains.The puffed rice grains are hollow and filled with air, hence being lighter than the puff rice.2. The raw rice grains are smaller and densely packed with starch, hence more of them fit in the container.
My Observation and Explanation

Step 3

Perform Case 2

  1. Count 10 grain of raw rice and 10 grains of puffed rice.
  2. Compare the volumes of both of them.

NOTE: I USED 160 Grains of each. It helps for a more distinct observation.

Now write down what you observe and an explanation for it

Investigation 2
The puff rice fills up more of the containter(more volume) than the raw rice grains.The puff rice occupies more space because it is larger than the raw rice, hence filling up more of the containter.
My Observation and Explanation

That’s all! This will help get a clearer understanding when or if you’re learning Density, Mass and Volume.
