My experience with teaching French

For over a month now, I have been teaching French to students at the official Alliance Française French language institute and cultural centre in Goa. As it is my first experience in teaching, and also my first job, this is definitely an experience worthy of sharing on my blog!

I tried using time-line format (rather than endless paragraphs) Let me know how it works out in the comments!

DELF B1

In December 2023, I answered my B1 Level DELF examination. I had been preparing for the exam since July. The DELF exam is an official French language diploma that certifies my level of French. It’s valid for life, and qualifies me to teach French to students in India, and English to students in France! I passed my B1 DELF with distinction.

Summer Vacations

A massive time jump!!
Apart from my 12th Grade Board French, I didn’t study any more French after B1 DELF.
(got busy with CLAT. CLAT Journey  blog post)

Once boards were over, I began looking for things to do until college. I reached out to Alliance Française in my city and I was overwhelmed with an encouraging response. There were summer camps being conducted soon and I could work there in May!

For the remainder of April, I worked on lesson plans for the upcoming classes. As the students were beginners, I designed it to be engaging with songs, games and activities!

A1.2 Course

Before the summer camp began, I was also appointed as a co-teacher for an ongoing A1.2 course. I still teach them every Saturday and sometimes Sundays if I need to fill in for my binôme (co-partner). We follow the book “Inspire 1”.

Summer Camp

A week after conducting my first A1.2 French class, I took over for the Summer Camp. These children were much younger (7-14) and it was a wild experience.

We often played mini games in class, covering the lessons in an efficient and entertaining way. The children were very enthusiastic and it was never boring teaching them. (keeping them quiet was a task!)

Here are a few photos of my time with them!

A1.2 Course

At present, I am still teaching the A1.2 batch of students. There are 4 students of the age 18-26. As an 18 year old myself, teaching people my age or even older was certainly out of the box. (P.S One of the students is my classmate from school!)

The A1.2 course is a lot more advanced than the beginners summer camp I conducted earlier. Before each class, I prepare what I will be teaching beforehand by going through the book and making sure I know everything myself.

The classes are conducted both offline and online (hybrid) hence initially, it took me a few classes to get adjusted to teaching students both offline and online simultaneously. As a teacher, I now realise that it’s important to adjust to the needs of all students equally.

Furthermore, teaching the A1.2 course is helping me revise the basics of my French again. I like when teaching becomes a mutual learning experience for both the teacher and the students.
